I love taking care of my skin, and because of it, I’m constantly researching and testing new products to improve it. I guess you can call me a skin junkie. Whether it’s creams, vitamins, or foods I love seeing how each one affects our largest organ, that most people ignore, our skin. We are so willing to cover up our skin but not take care of it. Funny thing is, if we were to take care of our skin, we would have no need to cover it up.

Now people are always asking me how I stay looking young. While a lot has to do with my skin care routine, it also has to do with what I put into my body and my environment. What you put in your gut, or what you don’t put in it, has a major effect on your skin and how you age. People may tell you it’s all genetics, but the truth is, genetics only play 40% into how you age. The other 60% is up to you.

FIRST THREE WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR SKIN

So what are the 7 ways to improve your skin right now? The first way to improve your skin is getting a full nights sleep. Sounds simple, right? Yet so many people don’t get enough sleep and it’s while you sleep that your skin heals itself. The skin’s repair mechanism does it’s best work in the evening but you have to give it a little help too. It’s why it’s so important to never go to bed with makeup on and always apply a serum and moisturizing night cream. So sleep, not going to bed with makeup on, and moisturizing your face at night are the first three things you can do. I’ve lumped them together because they work together. If you miss one or two of them, you are just damaging your skin, and trust me you will notice a difference.

FOURTH WAY TO IMPROVE YOUR SKIN

So those were the first three. Now the fourth way to improve your skin is by drinking green tea. Green tea not only has anti-inflammatory properties but it prevents collagen destruction that leads to wrinkles and sagging skin. I know not everyone likes the taste of green tea but nowadays there are so many varieties that I’m sure you will find one that you like. I prefer my tea hot but cold works too. Just make sure it’s not loaded up with sugar. I drink 2-3 oz of real matcha green tea twice a day (morning and afternoon). I also make my own sun tea everyday on my back deck, where I get full sun most of the day, and drink it throughout the day.

Now not everyone likes matcha but I prefer it because of it’s powerful antioxidants. It takes about 3 cups of regular green tea to get the same antioxidants in matcha tea. Just make sure it’s real matcha from Japan with nothing else added to get the real effects of it. Also, keep in mind when ordering matcha at coffee or tea houses, a lot of times their versions have sugar already mixed in it so even if you say no added sugar, it already has sugar in the tea mixture. Just be aware of what you are truly drinking if you’re doing it for health purposes.

The fifth is your water intake but I’m not talking about drinking water. In fact, I don’t drink 8 glasses of water like they say you’re supposed to. Why? Because you, I , and everyone else are not created equal. We are of different heights, pounds, body structure, and most important we all eat differently. Someone who eats lots of fruits, soups, vegetables, and salads everyday does not need to consume 8 glasses of water simply because they are already consuming water enriched foods.

And which of the two do you think is better for your skin? Water or water enriched foods? Water enriched foods wins hands down. There is no competition. Why? Because water is just that, water. While it has no calories and hydrates it also has no nutrients. Did you know that it’s certain nutrients (that your body loses as you age) that you need the most to maintain healthy beautiful skin. It’s not drinking water that keeps your skin looking young, it’s actually water enriched foods that do that.

They play a double role. Fruits, soups, vegetables, and salads, not only provide our bodies and skin with antioxidants, nutrients, vitamins, fiber, minerals, but they also hydrate us in a slower way than water does. What does that mean? It means less trips to the bathroom and water going where it’s intended to go through in your body. It means you can naturally hydrate your body, which in turn hydrates your skin, which in turn helps give you healthy glowing skin. How about that? All we need is what mother nature has always given us.

Haven’t you wondered what all the women in past centuries have done to maintain beautiful skin before we got bombarded with the countless beauty creams, botox, fillers, and plastic surgery. I’m the worst at drinking water and I don’t feel bad about it and you would never know by looking at my skin. Why? Because I consume water enriched foods instead. Still not convinced? Just try it for a week and see how you feel and look.

The sixth way is with vitamins. It doesn’t matter what you eat, you probably don’t get enough of the nutrients your body needs as you age. The following are my go to supplements to make sure my body and skin are getting what they need: a Multivitamin, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Omega 3, Vitamin B Complex, Lecithin, CoQ10, and Turmeric. I take the last one because not only is it a great anti-inflammatory but it’s great for asthma too (which I have). The turmeric helps me not need my inhaler which is a win win situation for me.

SEVENTH WAY TO IMPROVE YOUR SKIN

So now we are at the seventh and final way to improve your skin right now. Exercise. I know, I know, who has time for exercise? Who even likes to exercise? I can’t exercise because I have an injury. Those are some of the excuses we tell ourselves. I know because I’ve used all three of them at some point in my life. Here’s the thing…exercise doesn’t mean you have to join the gym or run a marathon. Exercise can be something as simple as walking, dancing, and even gardening. It can also start off as little as 20-30 minutes a few times a week. The important thing is to move your body especially if your job requires you to sit all day. It will improve your circulation which will improve your skin. 

Have you noticed how everything seems to be tied together? Why? Because they all have to do with our largest organ, our skin. And when our skin looks good and healthy, we feel better and gain confidence. What happens when we feel more confident? We strive for better things. It’s like a domino effect. One good thing leads to another good thing. So what are you waiting for? These are seven simple things you can start incorporating into your lifestyle now. Still seems too  much? Then start off with three things and slowly incorporate the other four. Step by step you will move forward and as you move forward and see how great it feels, you won’t want to ever go back.
